Plastic-Not-Fantastic

Want to make an easy change to reduce the plastic under your sink? Our Helen has some tips below…

A typical cleaning spray is 95% water packaged in a plastic bottle and we’re using billions of them to clean our homes. Even the ‘eco’ brands are selling us single-use plastic sprays, dishwasher tabs wrapped in plastic and laundry detergent bottled in…you get the picture.

Fortunately, there are now online brands that offer eco-friendly & non-plastic alternatives to Mr Muscle. Smol and Homethings are two UK businesses who make bathroom, multi-purpose and glass cleaner in tablet form – your tap provides the water (lightbulb moment right there)!

The tablets are posted out to you and you simply pop the tablet in a spray bottle, fill with water and spray to your heart’s content. Both companies offer a handy starter-kit where you get 3 reusable bottles alongside their bestselling products (they also do laundry tabs, dishwasher tabs, non-plastic sponges etc). If you then subscribe, it works out great value at roughly £5 a month for 3 tablets, so around £1.65 per bottle.

If you prefer the DIY approach, here’s a recipe for a brilliant glass/shiny surface spray that I couldn’t live without:

2 x cups water (use filtered water if you have it)

1 x cup white vinegar

1 x tsp washing up liquid (or 1 squirt!)

A few drops of essential oils (orange is great and disguises strong aromas)

Add all the ingredients to a jug, then pour into your spray bottle. Spray, wipe with a clean cloth and watch them windows gleam! Also excellent on your bathroom taps.

Tip: I bulk-buy ‘cleaning vinegar’ as a refill from The Healthy Life in Devizes, though any white vinegar will do. Save the balsamic for your salad!
